Climbing Esther’s Family Tree

Research has added a couple more generations of Schneiders to my family tree. And, no, they are not related—as far as I know—to the Jacob Schneider who married Catharina Nuss, father of my four times great grandfather Henry Snyder.

Up until recently I’ve had three known ancestors who were Schneiders and “tree-tops”1 for their respective lines:

  1. Jacob Schneider (ca 1756-1765–1829) who married Catharina Nuss
  2. Eva Elisabetha (Schneider) Jäger (1728–1804) wife of Johannes Jäger (1721–1796), ancestors of my fifth great grandmother Eva (Yeager) Strassburger, wife of Johann Andreas Strassburger (1754–1825)
  3. Esther (Schneider) Person (1801–1867), wife of Abraham Person (1797–1876) and mother of my three times great grandmother Helena (Person) Dillinger (1829–1894), wife of William Dillinger (1825–1896)

Recently, I decided to see what I could find on Abraham Person and his wife Esther Schneider now that deed records are online on FamilySearch. I got lucky and found Esther’s parents, grandparents, great grandparents, and great great grandparents.

Esther’s Parents

On 29 March 1861, “Anna Maria Schnyder, widow and relict of Jacob Snyder late of Upper Saucon township…, who died intestate, Samuel Snyder of Upper Milford Township…a son of said deceased and Catharine his wife, Abraham Person of Salisbury Township…and Esther his wife, who is a daughter of said deceased, Jacob Snyder of Lower Saucon township…another son of said deceased and Elisabeth his wife, and William Snyder of Warren County in the Commonwealth of New Jersey, another son… and Lydia his wife” sold 115 acres 10 perches in Upper Saucon Township to David Snyder (another son).2

Jacob Schneider was born 29 June 1778 and died 9 December 1860 in Upper Saucon Township.3 He was buried in Friedensville Cemetery. He married Anna Maria Shaffer, born 16 September 1780 and died 11 November 1863.4

The couple had five children:

  1. Esther Schneider was born 21 September 1801 and died 14 January 1867, Allentown, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania;5 she married Abraham Person.6 Abraham was born 9 March 1797 and died 26 April 1876.7 He, too, is buried in the Union-West End Cemetery in Allentown.
  2. William Schneider was born 30 March 1804 and died 1 July 1880, Washington Township, Warren County, New Jersey;8 he married Lydia Bogert.9
  3. David Schneider was born about 1810.10 He married Sarah (___).11
  4. Samuel Schneider was likely born 17 September 1812 and died 8 May 1891 in Emmaus Borough.12 He married Catharine (___).13
  5. Jacob Schneider Jr. was possibly born 25 April 1816 and died 15 June 1905 in Hellertown.14 He married Elizabeth (___).15

Esther’s Grandparents

According to the deeds, Jacob Snyder received 48 acres of his father’s land from Henry Egner, and his wife Catharine, and John Snyder on 3 May 1813. This land had been left by David Schneider to his heirs: Jacob Schneider, Catharina Schneider wife of Henry Egner, and John Schneider.16

David Schnyder’s will named his wife Esther and children Jacob, Catharine, and John.17 His executors were Abraham Snyder and John Geisinger.

David granted his wife the right to remain on his property until his youngest child (John) was 21 years-old and to “take wheat Rye as much as she as she [sic] & my children shall want for their Died [sic]…four old hogs and four shoads [sic] and kitchen gardon [sic] as much she will take and she shall have the Hoise [sic] to choose three sheeps out of my stock for her use and she my said wife shall have her peacable abode on my Premises…”

David Schnyder (aka Taylor) wrote his last will & testament on 22 August 1785 and it was probated 1 October 1785. He most likely died sometime in September 1785. He left behind a wife and three underage children. On 16 June 1789, David’s uncle Abraham petitioned the Orphans Court for guardians to be appointed for his children: Jacob, Catharina, and John.18 Esther likely died sometime between David’s writing his will and her children dividing their father’s land in 1804.

David and Esther had children:

  1. Jacob Schneider [see above]
  2. Catharina Schneider was born 19 January 1780 and died 6 July 1861 in Upper Saucon Township.19 She married Henry Egner.20 Some of Catharina’s children married into the same Wieder family that her brother Jacob’s great granddaughter Alavesta later joined. Their children were first and second cousins of Alavesta’s husband, E. J. Wieder.
  3. John Schneider was born before 1783.

Esther’s Great Grandparents & Great Great Grandparents

On 25 June 1804, David’s children divided up between them the real estate that remained in his estate after the executors had sold a portion to pay his debts. Catharina and her husband received 65 acres of land as her full portion from the estate, Jacob received the rest of the remaining land, and John received £675.21

This deed records the history of the land from its first purchase from the Proprietaries of the province. The land was purchased by Heinrich Schneider on 20 June 1743, the patent recorded in Patent Book A11:187. 22 Henry Schneider and his wife Elizabeth granted the land to Mary Schneider, “widow the relict and administratrix… of there [sic] son Jacob Schneider late of the place abovesaid [Upper Saucon] yeoman deceased for the use of David Schneider and Elizabeth then a minor children under the age of twenty one years” on 18 May 1759.

Jacob Schneider and his wife Mary were both likely born sometime before 1738, possibly in Pennsylvania. Jacob died prior to 18 May 1759 and Mary sometime after that. More research is required to narrow those timeframes. Prior to his death, Jacob’s father sold 227 acres in Upper Saucon Township to him, but did not complete the deed. After his death, Heinrich and wife Elizabeth had the deed recorded and Mary gave them the second payment for the land.

Jacob and Mary had children:

  1. David Schneider was born between 18 May 1738 and 1757 and died in September 1785.
  2. Elizabeth Schneider was born between 18 May 1738 and 18 May 1759. No more is currently known.

Henry Schneider (aka Taylor) was living in Richland Township, Bucks County when he and his wife Elizabeth sold the land to their daughter-in-law Mary in 1759.23 He patented the land on Saucon Creek on 20 June 1743 prior to the creation of Northampton County. The land adjoined that of Thomas Owen, Valentine Humil, Isaac Samuel, and John Pugh. He may have been the Henry Schneider who died 16 September 1761 and was buried in East Swamp Mennonite Cemetery in Quakertown.24

Henry and his wife Elizabeth had at least two children:

  1. Jacob Schneider [see above]
  2. Abraham Schneider died after 16 June 1789. 25
Esther Schneider's ancestry

Esther (Schneider) Person’s ancestry

Based on this research Heinrich Schneider and his wife Elizabeth are my eight times great grandparents through their son Jacob and grandson David. Heinrich was most likely my immigrant ancestor on this line. Both Jacob and David died young, leaving behind widows with young children. Makes you wonder what their lives were like growing up.

Surname Saturday: My Ahnentafel List

I don’t believe I actually have a full list of my direct ancestors anywhere on my site. So, for Surname Saturday, I thought I’d do an ahnentafel report of my ancestral lines as I have them in my family database.

What’s an ahnentafel report? Here’s a definition from the Encyclopedia of Genealogy:

Ahnentafel
“Ahnentafel is a German word that literally translates as ‘ancestor table’. It is a list of all known ancestors of an individual and includes the full name of each ancestor as well as dates and places of birth, marriage, and death whenever possible.”1

My Ahnentafel

Please consider this unproven information, unless otherwise documented on this site. There are sections where I’m still working on connections between generations. And since it’s unproven, I will be making revisions to this page, adding, deleting, etc.

I’ve added a line break between paternal and maternal lines to help distinguish between the two.

Phew! That’s a lot of names. And as I entered them, I realized that there are a whole lot of people that I know very little about. With as much fun as I’m having on my projects, maybe it’s time to start focusing on the people from whom I’m [allegedly] descended.

Surname Saturday: Samuel Krehl Leedy

Once again it’s time for Surname Saturday. I’ve finished all my great great grandfathers, so it’s time to move back a generation This week I’m writing about my 3x great grandfather, Samuel Krehl Leedy, father of my 2x great grandmother Lillian Ainsley (Leedy) Hocker.

Samuel was born 30 October 1829, most likely in Buffalo Township, Perry County, Pennsylvania.1 He was the son of John and Catharine (Krehl) Leedy.2 Samuel died 19 March 1912 in Upper Mifflin Township, Cumberland County, Pennsylvania and was buried on the 22nd in Hill Cemetery near Buffalo, Perry County, Pennsylvania. He died of apoplexy. Samuel was a farmer.

About 1856, he married Sarah Parsons, presumably the daughter of Anthony and Catharine (Bowerman) Parsons, of Perry County. She was born in Feb 1833.3 I have death dates for her from 1926 through 1930, but nothing proven. She died sometime after the 1920 census enumeration where she was living with her daughter Grace and her husband William Hunt.4

Samuel and Sarah (Parsons) Leedy had children:

  1. Wilhelmina Leedy was born ca 1857 in Perry County. Minnie married Harry Delcamp and was living in Philadelphia in 1932 when her sister Mary (Leedy) Sheesley died.
  2. John Harbough Leedy was born 29 Oct 1858 in Perry County and died 2 Jun 1936. He married Emma Catharine Rouch on 17 Jan 1883.
  3. Kirk Leedy died Apr 1859 and was buried in Hill Cemetery.
  4. Lillian Ainsley Leedy was born 4 May 1861 in Perry County and died 20 Jan 1942 in Cumberland County. She married about 1881 Albert Curtin Hocker of Swatara Township, Dauphin County.
  5. Mary Leedy was born in Nov 1863 and died in 1932. She married Hiram Sheesley on 25 Feb 1886 in Harrisburg, Pennsylvania. She died Saturday, 26 November 1932 in Fort Hunter, Pennsylvania.
  6. Grace Leedy was born 6 Oct 1865 in Perry County and died 6 Jun 1935 in Harrisburg. She married William Hunt on 27 Oct 1887 in Harrisburg.
  7. Samuel Kirk Leedy was born 20 Nov 1867 in Perry County and died 28 Jun 1946 in Roxbury, Pennsylvania. He married Mary (___).
  8. Ulysses S. Grant Leedy was born in 1871 in Perry County and died 14 May 1956 in Cumberland County. Grant married Mary C. (___) about 1905.
  9. Harry Leedy was born 28 Sep 1875 and died 2 Aug 1876. He is buried with Kirk Leedy in Hill Cemetery.

Michael Frantz of Lower Paxton Township

Peter Gardner patent landOn 30 October 1860, Michael and Elizabeth Frantz of Swatara Township sold to Michael A Frantz 93 acres that had been part of a tract that Michael (the father) had inherited—along with his sisters Elizabeth and Mary—from their father Michael Frantz.1 Michael Frantz Sr. died in Lower Paxton Township (now Swatara Township) Dauphin County sometime between 25 June 1793, when he and his wife Franny sold land to Susanna Eaglea, and 17 October 1797 when his administrators John Nissley and Christian Frantz settled his administration account.2 Here’s what I found in the Dauphin County Orphans Court Book.

John Niesley and Christian France Administrators of all and singular Goods and Chattles Rights and Credits which were of Michael France late of Paxton Township deceased appeared in Court and produced their account upon the administration of the Estate of the said deceased duly passed before the Register from which there appears to be a balance in their hands of three hundred and seventy five pounds eleven shillings and eleven pence which account upon examination the Court do approve and allow and direct that the said balance after deducting thirteen shillings and two pence the expence of this Court be distributed according to Law

The Court appoint Christian France of Manheim Township in the County of Lancaster Guardian of the person and estate of Mary France a minor daughter under the age of fourteen years of Michael France late of Lower Paxton Township deceased during her minority.

Elizabeth France a minor daughter above the age of fourteen years of Michael France late of Lower Paxton Township deceased comes into Court and chooses Christian France of Manheim Township in the County of Lancaster Guardian of her Estate during her minority and the Court approve of and appoint the said Christian France her Guardian accordingly.

The Court appoint Jacob France of Manor Township in the County of Lancaster Guardian of the persons and estates of John France, Michael France and Veronica France minor children under the age of fourteen of Michael France late of Lower Paxton Township decease during their respective minorities3

I find it quite probable that Christian and Jacob Frantz—guardians of his children—were relatives, perhaps brothers, of Michael Frantz. John Nissley was likely the brother of Michael’s wife Feronica “Franny” (Nissley) Frantz.4

Michael and Feronica (Nissley) Frantz had children:

  1. Elizabeth Frantz (28 Mar 1780—2 May 1850)5 married Rev. John Mumma (11 Mar 1776—3 Aug 1859)6
  2. Mary Frantz (after 17 October 1783—?) 7 married Jacob Snavely
  3. John Frantz (after 17 October 1783—before 1807).
  4. Michael Frantz (22 May 1789—5 Jun 1866) married twice—first to Elizabeth Neidig, daughter of John and Mary (Bear) Neidig, and second to  Elizabeth Walters, daughter of Jacob and Anna (Stauffer) Walters
  5. Veronica Frantz (after 17 October 1783—before 19 May 1810).

Michael Frantz Jr. was the father of Anna Frantz, my 3x great grandmother and wife of Levi Hocker, who died mysteriously in 1876.

Surname Saturday: Emanuel John Wieder

My great great grandfather Emanuel John Wieder was born on 11 November 1855, most likely in Lehigh County, Pennsylvania.1 He was the youngest son of Saulus and Anna (Mechling) Wieder of Lower Milford Township, Lehigh County, Pennsylvania.

Emanuel and Alavesta Wieder ca1915

Emanuel and Alavesta (Dillinger) Wieder, ca 1915

On 10 June 1878, he married Alavesta “Vesta” Esther Dillinger, daughter of Willam D. and Helena (Person) Dillinger of Lehigh County. She was born 19 Oct 1857, likely in Upper Milford Township.2

E.J. Wieder, Sr. was initially a teacher and a farmer, but—due to health concerns, I believe—became a bank cashier, working his way up to bank president by 1929.3 He built a house on main street in Pennsburg in 1902 and moved his family from the farm in Lower Milford Township into town.4

He died of stomach cancer on 26 July 1929 in Pennsburg and was buried in St. Mark’s Union Church cemetery on the 30th.5 Vesta had died on 11 January 1923 in Pennsburg of angina and Bright’s disease. She was buried in St. Mark’s Union Church cemetery on the 16th.6

E.J. and Vesta had the following children:

  1. Edwin J. Wieder (29 March 1880—22 January 1960) married Mary Catharine Waage (27 October 1877—28 November 1970)
  2. Cora Anna Wieder (June 1886—1964) married Vallandingham S. Trumbore (23 October 1883—August 1968)
  3. John William Wieder (1 September 1887—November 1972) married Katherine Jane Gruelich (22 March 1887—September 1960)

Surname Saturday: Henry D. Snyder

Henry Snyder (1859-1931)

Henry Snyder (1859-1931)

My great great grandfather Henry D. Snyder, son of Joseph and Judith (Deysher) Snyder, was born 3 Mar 1859 in Pennsylvania, probably in Montgomery or Bucks counties.1 He died in Upper Hanover, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania on 30 Sep 1931.

About 1879, Henry married Saraphine K. Witmer, daughter of Edward J. and Lydia Amanda (Kline) Witmer of Bucks County. Saraphine was born 30 Oct 1861 in near Pennsburg, Marlborough Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.2 She died 4 Aug 1938 in Lansdale, Hatfield Township, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania where she was living with her daughter and son-in-law.

Henry and Saraphine (Witmer) Snyder had one child, a daughter:

  1. Lillian Witmer Snyder, born 26 Oct 1879 in Marlborough Township, Montgomery County and died 13 Feb 1949 in Sellersville Hospital, Bucks County, Pennsylvania. She married Elmer Calvin Greulich, son of Charles and Caroline (Wolf) Greulich, on 21 Sep 1901 in East Greenville, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

Surname Saturday: William Smith

William Smith, my great great grandfather, was born 25 Sep 1851 in Greenburn, Whitburn district, West Lothian, Scotland.1 He was the son of James and Isobel/Isabella (Aitken) Smith.2 He died on 23 Feb 1905 in Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania.3  He was allegedly buried in Paxtang Cemetery in a grave donated by a family friend (or his son James was), although his death record states he was buried in Harrisburg Cemetery. I’ve not been able to prove or disprove either location.

William and his children have somewhat difficult to research—as one might expect given their surname. I was able to trace William as a boy in Scotland through the 1851 and 1861 Scottish census entries for his family. On 30 Mar 1851, James, Isabella and their children were living at Crossroads in Whitburn parish in Linlithgow, Scotland.4 William was listed as age 2.

James and Isabella both died in 1856, leaving their children orphans.5 Their sons—Thomas and William—were living with their aunt and uncle Margaret and Thomas Smith in Whitburn parish, Linlithgow in 1861.6 Thomas was working as an “engine man,” probably at nearby mine with his Uncle William who was a miner, while William was still in school.

Sometime after this William went to work as a ship’s engineer, presumably for the White Star line. Wingeard states William tried to emigrate to New York in 1871, but he must have returned to Scotland as he married Eliza Craig Bonnington on 12 Dec 1882 at The Manse, Uphall Parish, Linlithgow, Scotland.7  The daughter of Peter Purvis and Elizabeth (Buchanan) Bonnington, Eliza was born 2 Oct 1866 in Juniper Green, Colinton parish, Midlothian, Scotland.8 Eliza died 18 Oct 1846, at age 80, in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania.9

William must have been determined to come to America, though. He filed a declaration of intent to become an American citizen in Berks County on 20 Sep 1886 and became a U.S. citizen on 12 Jan 1893 in Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania. William and Eliza must have come over together and sent for their young children after they’d settled, because young James and Bess Smith were living with their grandparents on 2 Apr 1871 in Loanhead parish, Midlothian, Scotland.10

The family was all together, living in Harrisburg in Jun of 1900 at 1437 Zarker Street.11 William is listed as an engineer as is his eldest son James. According to the census, he immigrated in 1887 and had been in the U.S. for 13 years. This is the only document I have that shows the whole family together. William died just 4½ years after the census; his youngest son, Robert, was only 5 years old.

William and Eliza Craig (Bonnington) Smith had six children:

  1. Elizabeth “Lizzie” Smith, born and died 17 Jun 1884, Liberton parish, Midlothian, Scotland
  2. James Smith, born 22 Jun 1885, Liberton parish, Midlothian, Scotland and may have died in Texas or Pennsylvania
  3. Elizabeth Marian “Bess” Smith, born 31 Oct 1887 in Liberton parish, Midlothian, Scotland and died 3 Jan 1973, Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania; she married Frank L. Lutz on 7 May 1917 in Elkton, Maryland
  4. William “Willie” M. Smith, born 28 Mar 1892, Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania and may have died in France after WWI
  5. Isabella Aiken Smith, born 4 Apr 1893 and died 21 Jul 1962 in Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania; she married William Howard Hocker on 13 Oct 1914 in Harrisburg.
  6. Robert “Bobbie” Thomas Alexander Smith, born 7 Apr 1899 in Harrisburg, Dauphin County, Pennsylvania and died 12 Nov 1970 in Philadelphia, Philadelphia County, Pennsylvania; He married a woman named Ruth.
