Charles Philipp Greulich

Charles Philipp Greulich

Karl2 Philipp Greulich (aka Charles Philipp) was born 13 Sep 1838 in Haag, Mosbach, Germany, the son of Georg Philipp Greulich and Anna Margaretha Wurzel.1,2,3 He died 2 Feb 1904 in East Greenville, Montgomery County, Pennsylvania.

After his father’s death on 12 May 1855, Karl left Germany at the age of 17 and came to the United States. A passport dated November 8, 1855 was issued at Neckargemund for Karl Philipp Greulich and two relatives—his sister Eva Katarina Greulich and their half-brother Georg Philipp Jakob. Karl anglicized his name to Charles and learned the shoemaker trade from Samuel O. Stauffer of North Zionsville, Pennsylvania. I presume he chose this profession because his father was also a shoemaker back home in Haag. He became a naturalized citizen.4
